JAEHYO LEE OPENS EXHIBITION AT REEVES CONTEMPORARY

Jaehyo Lee opens his first solo sculpture show in the United States at Reeves Contemporary on February 14th, 2008 with an opening reception between 6-8 p.m. The exhibition continues through March 15th . Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 10 – 6 p.m.

Working with wood, nails, steel and stone as his primary materials, Lee focuses his attention on exploring nature’s structural construction. He fastidiously works his media. Rather than dismantling each sculptural component and creating a hybrid aesthetic, Lee’s works emphasize his materials’ most essential natures and inherently complex textures.

He has said of his work: “…I drive, countless nails into wood, bend them, grind them, and then burn the wood, making [the] nails protrude and at the same time blackening its…natural color. Then glittering metallic nails on the blackened charcoal become ever more conspicuous.”

Often deemed minimalistic, his typically massive scaled work centers around circular motifs and issues of gravity. The trajectory of this exhibition strives to reveal Lee’s refined approach to nature, the consummate muse to his ideological and spatial concerns.

Lee graduated from Hong-Ik University in 1992, and is the prize winner of the Hankook Ilbo Young Artists Award in 1997, the Osaka Triennial Award in 1998, the Kim Sae-Jung Award in 2000, the Sculpture in Woodland Award in 2002, and the Japan Hyogo International Competition Ward in 2004.

His work resides in the permanent collections of the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea; Hyogo Prefecture Museum of Art, Japan; Busan Metropolitan Art Museum, South Korea; and the Osaka Contemporary Art Center, Japan.
