HAVEN-SMITH SCULPTURES AND CARVAJAL-HUFSCHMID WOODBLOCKS AT REEVES December 8th - January 14th Gary Haven Smith, a stone sculptor based in New Hampshire, has new works on view at Reeves Contemporary in conjunction with unique woodblock prints by Columbian artist, Amparo Carvajal Hufschmid. The exhibition runs from December 8th – January 14th, 2006. Gary Haven-Smith, who works with the found stone of his native New Hampshire, is challenged by the massive, naturally-occurring stone forms found near his home. He describes the process of finding what the stone wants to do as “bumping shoulders with the stone.” This gracious approach opens a call and response creative process, where he is constantly listening to, and tuning, the material. The lyricism he discovers within the massive and dense rock is stunning; by creating apertures in this dense material, the stone becomes light and porous. After having had residencies in Greece, Italy and in many locations in the United States, Haven-Smith has exhibited his work throughout the northeast, in New York, and in Europe to wonderful reception. His work is in corporate collections such as General Electric, Fidelity Investments, Chase Manhattan Bank, Putnam Investments, and Healthsource, among others, as well as in numerous private collections and sculpture parks. He teaches in New England. Amparo Carvajal Hufschmid, a native of Columbia, has pursued the rigorous art of woodblock printmaking for many years. In this current series, the overlay of up to 18 colors laid in a thicket of color and pattern is exceptionally done. Each piece can take up to three weeks to complete, as each layer ing of color is pressed into the Japanese paper and then allowed to dry. Her subtle eye for color can, in this series of prints, juxtapose strong reds, greens and yellows, threadin g them together to create an intricate, tapestry-like effect. Now a resident of the United States, Amparo works primarily in printmaking, especially in woodblock printing and collage. She is a graduate of the Museum School in Boston, and has shown her work in the US and in Latin America. Gary Haven Smith and Amparo Carvajal Hufschmid will be exhibiting works at the REEVES CONTEMPORARY gallery through January 14th. The exhibition runs from February 12th through March 16th, and the gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday, 10-5:30. Michael Mulhern is well known for minimalist work that explores viscosity and density in a monochromatic format. He considers painting a synthesis of object and surface: these large format works on paper emphasize the valleys and contours of stressed paper, with luminous pools of aluminum paint. These are spectacular surfaces. His exploration of the pooling and veiling of paint creates a spectrum of inferred coloration. When combined with his complex surfaces, the finished paintings read like impeccably wrought tapestries. The added element of ash in his paintings occurred when the Trade Towers fell. Mulhern’s studio is in the block facing the site, and ash poured into his space, infiltrating all the materials in the studio. The Ash series is a quiet homage to the event. David Yezzi of ARTnews stated, “Mulhern gets a remarkable breadth of expression and lyricism from wistfully slender means.” Another reviewer observed, “They are pugnacious and elegant paintings that make us think about the nature of abstraction itself.” Born and raised in Scotland the artist now lives in New York and has been pursuing abstract painting for several decades. His work has been shown consistently to critical acclaim and is in numerous private and corporate collections. Gary Haven-Smith, who lives and works in his New Hampshire studio, is challenged by the massive ‘found’ or naturally occurring stone that surrounds his home. He describes the process of finding what the stone wants to do as “bumping shoulders with the stone.” This gracious approach opens a call and response creative process, where he is constantly listening to, and tuning, the material. The lyricism he discovers within the massive and dense rock is stunning; often he incorporates gold leaf which imparts an innate nobility and elegance. The exhibition at Reeves Contemporary features several of the large stone installation pieces, vertical structures that combine several stones, honed to a fine patina on one surface and left raw and untouched on the other. They are exhilarating in their massiveness, and contemplative in their poise. Haven-Smith has exhibited his work throughout the northeast, in New York, and in Europe to wonderful reception. His work is in corporate collections such as General Electric, Fidelity Investments, Chase Manhattan Bank, Putnam Investments, and Healthsource, among others, as well as in numerous private collections and sculpture parks. He teaches in New England, New Mexico and in Italy. Reeves Contemporary is located at 535 West 24th Street on the second floor. The next exhibition features bamboo ‘vehicles’ by Milan Klic, which opens on March 18th. For more information, call 212 714 0044.
